Chlamydia

Chlamydia Overview

Chlamydia is a common sexually transmitted infection (STI) that affects both men and women with a high incidence rate mainly among sexually active young adults. It is caused by the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis. Chlamydia usually affects the sexual organs, but can also occur in the anus, mouth or throat and even produce conjunctival infections in the eyes. This infection can result in serious health problems in men and in women.

  • Currently, one in five adults in the U.S. have an STD.
  • Chlamydia is the most common nationally notifiable sexually transmitted infection in      the United States.
  • The last CDC data reported shows a total of 1,649,716 cases of Chlamydia      trachomatis infection were reported in a one-year time span in America.
  • Chlamydia symptoms often show pain in the genitals or pelvis, burning urination,      abnormal discharge, uncomfortable intercourse, and abnormal bleeding      between or after periods.
  • Typical antibiotics are azithromycin and doxycycline for chlamydia.

IMPORTANT: Chlamydia infections also display the same symptoms as gonorrhea and trichomoniasis. To ensure the clearing of all STD infections, we recommend double or triple treatment.

NOTE: Lab testing is NOT required for treatment but is available. Many patients request a 'test of cure' lab which is taken after treatment to ensure the infection has been cleared. Supply your specimen for testing at a lab near you or with an at-home kit delivered to you.

Gonorrhea

Description:

Gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) that can infect both men and women. It can cause infections in the genitals, rectum, and throat. It is a very common infection, especially among young people ages 15-24 years.

Symptoms:

A Burning sensation when urinating. A white, yellow, or green discharge from the penis. Painful or swollen testicles (although this is less common)

Treatment:

The typical treatment is azithromycin and cephalosporin class antibiotics for gonorrhea

Trichomoniasis

 Description:

Trichomoniasis also called “trich,” is an STI caused by a parasite.  Currently, 1 in 5 adults have an STD.  It is usually cured with antibiotics. In women, this infection can cause genital itching, an unpleasant and foul-smelling vaginal discharge, and painful urination. It is among the most common STIs in the US and affects more women than men. Men with trichomoniasis usually have no symptoms.

Symptoms:

Most individuals with trichomoniasis do not have any symptoms and feel completely fine, so they may not even know or realize they have it. However, when this infection causes symptoms, the most common one is vaginitis. Trichomoniasis symptoms and signs for women include:

  • Foul-smelling vaginal discharge — the color may be white, yellow, gray, or green
  • Genital redness, itching, and burning
  • Pain with urination or sexual intercourse

When men have signs and symptoms, they may include:

  • Irritation inside the penis
  • Burning sensation after ejaculation
  • Penile discharge

Treatment:

The typical treatment is metronidazole and tinidazole for trichomoniasis .

Treating: Gonorrhea/Chlamydia/Trichomoniasis

Did you have unprotected sex with a stranger?  It does happen and you are not alone.  Sometimes it is just easier to treat for all three then test to make sure you are clean.  When prescribing for all three diseases: Gonorrhea, Chlamydia, and Trichomoniasis, 3 medications are used.  You will be prescribed tinidazole, azithromycin, and doxycycline.  All three medications are taken together.
