Hair loss in men
There are two types of male pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia) at the crown and in the middle of the scalp. The cause of male pattern baldness is generally genetic in nature.
Treatment:
There are several topical medications that can be purchased over the counter. Medication that is only available by prescription is Finasteride. This medication works by decreasing the amount of natural body hormone (DHT). Decreasing the amount of DHT leads to increased hair regrowth and slower hair loss. Hair growth on the other parts of the body is not affected by finasteride.
Cautions with Finasteride:
· This medication should not be used by women or children.
· Finasteride is not approved for prevention of prostate cancer.
· Finasteride may slightly increase the risk of developing a very serious form of prostate cancer.
· Finasteride may interfere with labs such as PSA. It has been shown to decrease the PSA by 50% during the first 12 months of use.
· Decreased sexual ability/desire may occur.
· In some men, Finasteride may decrease the amount of semen released during sex.
These side effects of decreased sexual desire and decreased semen have continued in some men after stopping.
